Thanksgiving 2017 – 11 Thanksgiving Life Hacks to Make Your Holiday Easier

11 Thanksgiving Life Hacks to Make Your Holiday Easier

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

We all love Thanksgiving. It’s a great day to relax, eat, drink, watch football, and spend time with loved ones (and even not so loved ones). But if your the host of the holiday, it can be quite stressful. It’s a lot to worry about: Is the turkey cooked correctly? Are the mashed potatoes fluffy? Did the pies cook evenly? Where are those recipes?

It’s enough to make, even the most relaxed person, stress to the point of shaking

Well, we are here to help! Look no further than the Kerr team to make your Thanksgiving as Painless and flowing with ease as possible with these

11 Thanksgiving Life Hacks to Make Your Holiday Easier

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

1.) Ambiance

This is step one. Before you cook anything, plan ahead and make your guests feel welcome. And just because you want things to look nice, doesn’t mean you have to break the bank.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey Use pine cones from the yard, cook them on a cooking sheet in the oven for about 20 minutes on 400 degrees, to remove undesirables that have made the pine cones their home, and arrange them on a simple serving tray, or surround a glass covered candle, as a center piece for your Thanksgiving table.
Set the mood for your guests by setting up your own candle design. Use a simple glass, or buy one from a local warehouse store for extremely cheap, it doesn’t have to be amazing, you’re not opening a bar, just lighting a candle. Put un-popped popcorn kernels on the sides of the glass to give it a cool feel. Wrap a bow around it for added charm. Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey
Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey Use a pumpkin as a wine cooler. If you decide to make pumpkin pie from scratch, don’t discard the pumpkin itself. Line the interior with plastic wrap, fill it with ice, then place a few bottles of wine, depending on the size of the pumpkin, to give your guests a cute twist on their drinks!

2.) Recipes

One of the hardest parts of thanksgiving that you can’t fix is space. Your counter can only hold so many items before it is full of stuff. Don’t clutter it with big, or even small, cookbooks. You don’t have room for THAT!

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

Plan ahead. Print out recipes before, or copy them, and tape them to your cabinet doors. This will not only save space, but keep the recipe eye level, so you can refer to it with ease.

3.) Pre-Cut

Aside from space, another thing we can’t help is time. You can’t make more of it, but you can manage it to perfection. One of those things you can do is prep your meal by cutting your vegetables either the day before or the night before and put them in plastic sandwich bags. Do it to a precise level by splitting them up into separate bags and label them with the dish they are for. We are not all Gordon Ramsey in the kitchen, and able to cut veggies and such in one fail swoop. Take your time, don’t hurt yourself, and save it for later. Your fingers will thank you.

4.) Clean Your Potatoes with a Dishwasher

Mashed potatoes are a staple at Thanksgiving. If you have a large group of people coming, make washing potatoes an ease by washing them in the dishwasher (no soap). This will not only make it easy to clean them, but it makes peeling them a breeze. Another tip to skin them, is boil the potatoes for a little bit, then throw them in ice water. The drastic change in temperature will shock the skin and make peeling a breeze.

5.) More Potatoes

As discussed earlier, potatoes are delicious, but so time consuming. Remove that task by cooking the potatoes in a slow cooker, or at the very least, keep them warm in a crock pot. You’ll have a whole other burner for gravy (or whatever). Also, use a little bit of baking powder, this will make the potatoes even fluffier.

6.) Use Your Coolers

Again, space is key to an organized meal. Don’t use up valuable real estate in your fridge on cans of soda, wine, water, or whatever. Use your coolers. This will keep the drinks cold, while keeping the guests out of your way and hot items off their shirts. Also, if you plan on making corn, a cooler can be used quite well to cook it. Though it keeps things quite cold, it can also keep things hot. Put the ears of corn at the bottom and boil a kettle of water. Then just dump the boiling water on the corn and let physics work.

7.) Use a Coffee Thermos to Keep Gravy Warm

Again, time is key! Make your gravy beforehand and use a typical coffee thermos to keep it warm. If it works for coffee, it’ll work for gravy. Plus everyone will be impressed, and you’ll look like a culinary MacGyver. (To be an extra wiz in the kitchen, add some soy sauce to the gravy. It really adds a great kick!)

8.) Make Pies Easy

Listen, we all love pie. But it can be a hassle. Here’s a couple easy tricks to help you:

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey Make your pie shell early, then freeze it. It will save not only time, but the pie will maintain its shape better in the oven. This will free up time later on.
Weigh down your pie crust with rice, beans, or even loose change. Just wrap the crust in napkins, or plastic wrap, or even aluminum foil. Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey
Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey To give your pie the perfect riveting around the outside of the pie crust, use an old necklace to give that perfect indentation. I recommend an old necklace, so you don’t ruin your Sunday’s best.

9.) Perfect Stuffing

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

To avoid a mess, use a cupcake tray to cook your stuffing. This, not only portions out the stuffing equally among your guests, but this gives it the perfect amount of browning to the stuffing, while it cooks in the oven.

10.) Use a Wine Glass to Cut Biscuits

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

Use an older wine glass to cut biscuits out of your dough. I’d say an older glass, just in case you put too much pressure and break the glass. But doing this will give your biscuits uniformity and make the cutting a breeze.

11.) The Turkey

The Turkey is the centerpiece of this meal. There are several ways that you can spruce up the turkey, or save it if your like me.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

Take a Look:

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

Ice Down Your Turkey before cooking it to keep it from drying out. Believe it or not, this works. Cook the breast at a slightly lower temperature, this will solve the problem of the white meat cooking faster than the dark.

Slow the cook the turkey overnight to save the oven space. Yes, you can. And yes, this will make your Thanksgiving feel infinitely easier. Pop the bird in the oven the evening before and wake up to a nearly completed Thanksgiving feast.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey DIY Aluminum Foil Roasting Rack. The point of a rack is to hold your bird above the pan so heat can circulate evenly. Who says it has to be made of wire or cost a lot of money? If you don’t have the store-bought variety, crumple some sheets of foil into thick ropes and wrap them in coils on the bottom of your pan. Or go biodegradable and place the bird on a bed of halved onions, carrots and celery.
Use Chicken Broth as a Revive Your Turkey.  Overcooked the bird? Before you spirit that platter of dried-out breast meat to the table, drizzle it with a little warm chicken broth. It’ll help moisten the meat and add flavor. This is also a good trick for perking up slices that have gone from room temp to cold. Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey
Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey  Cook white meat and dark meat separately.  Never, never let dry breast meat happen to you. Check out this helpful video that shows exactly how to break down a turkey into parts, then cook separately with recipes like Butter-Roasted Turkey Breast and Braised Turkey Thighs.

Measuring Cup As a Fat Separator. The secret to great gravy is skimmed — not greasy — pan drippings. If you’re without a fat separator, pour your drippings into a large heatproof measuring cup and pop it in the freezer. As the drippings cool, the fat will rise to the top and solidify, making it easy to skim off with a spoon.

NOW!

All that’s left is time to feast.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

For Clean Up, the best advice I can give, clean as you go. It’ll save up so much more time and leave you more space to cook.

And, as Always:

  • The Dark Carnival Halloween 2017 in New Jersey

136 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville, NJ 08721

Since Antiquity, visually unusual beings had been exhibited in public spaces.  In the 16th century, street performances involving these beings were organized for the enjoyment of the public.

Later Freak shows featuring a number of ‘monsters’ contributed to the success of travelling shows. For more than a hundred years, the sideshow was to become an indispensable part of American circus culture.  Classic attractions of the past included the giant, the fat lady, the midget, the three-legged boy, the armless wonder and the thin man.

105 Sideshows used to exist in the United States alone, but today the business of sideshows has all but disappeared due to public scorn.  Until today…..

The Dark Carnival brings you New Jersey’s First Traveling Side Show.

Be amazed as you meet the Morbus, the Aquatic Fish Boy.  Taken straight from the Atlantic waters off Morocco, Morbus is an exotic, land dwelling fish that one must see to believe.

Step back as you witness the spectacle of Algano, the Amphibious Lizard Man.  Complete with scales and a slimy coat, Algano is sure to challenge your minds boundaries between the possible and impossible.

Finally, our greatest attraction… Mongo the Human Mutant.  Grotesquely deformed, one might debate if Mongo is human at all.  Completely devoid of all ability to learn and function in the human world, Mongo has known nothing but sideshow life since his birth.  Be careful as you approach him however he can be as dangerous as he is unusual.

So come one, come all to the Dark Carnival !!!   If you have unquenchable curiosity for the outlandish,  thirst for the unknown, and both an attraction and repulsion for the diseased and deformed, we have put together the show for you.  Visit our Sideshow of Oddities and we assure you that your mind, your curiosity, and all the beliefs you have ever held true will be questioned forever.

Tickets: $20.00

St. Patrick's Day Parades in New Jersey 2017

Guide to 2017 St. Patrick’s Day Parades in New Jersey

2017 St. Patrick's Day Parades in New Jersey

It’s time to “Go Green”, again. No we’re not speaking about global warming or leaving a carbon footprint, we’re talking about the Greenest day of the year,  St. Patrick’s Day.  Now even though, technically, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th (a Friday this year, by the way), New Jersey tends to make a month long celebration of the holiday with parades and festivals.

2017 St. Patrick's Day Parades in New Jersey

But where to find them?

Don’t worry, we got you covered…

Guide to 2017’s St. Patrick’s Day Parades in New Jersey

2017 St. Patrick's Day Parades in New Jersey

Editor’s Note: Parades Ordered by Date and Time, Not Location

1. Hoboken, NJ: Saturday, March 4th, 2017

All Day (Pick any time)

Though, again, technically, Hoboken has not had a St. Patrick’s Day Parade since 2011 (Why? Let’s say, the parades got, uh, vivacious), the local watering holes still celebrate the day with exclusive deals and irish fare galore. This is one of the most popular “festivals” in the state, so be prepared for crowds and rambunctiousness.

2. Mount Holly, NJ: Saturday, March 4th, 2017

1:00pm

The only St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Burlington county, beginning in Downtown Mount Holly. The parade is filled with all the Irish fare we’ve come to know, along with fun for the whole family, filled with bagpipe bands, Irish bands, step dancers, and other traditional Irish “craic”. Then enjoy the traditional after party at High Street grill, filled with the sound of Irish music playing on two stages all day, a great time.

3. Nutley, NJ: Saturday, March 4th, 2017

1:00 pm

This is more of a traditional St. Patrick’s Day Parade, beginning at 10:00 am with it’s beginning at Holy Family Church down Harrison Street to Franklin Avenue, and ending at Chestnut Street. The post-parade party takes place at the Franklin Steakhouse until 6pm. Almost makes you feel like riverdancing.

2017 St. Patrick's Day Parades in New Jersey

4. Belmar, NJ: Sunday, March 5th, 2017

12:30 pm

A great St. Patrick’s Day Parade! Just because there’s a crisp to the air, doesn’t mean the shore stops trucking. Beginning at the north end of Main Street in Lake Como at 12:30pm, this is a fun time for all. Though, it can tend to get a little roudy, most of the rowdiness tends to stay close to bars, closer to 16th Avenue and 10th Avenue, rather than the family friendly parade.

5. Wildwood, NJ: Saturday, March 11th, 2017

11:30 am

This parade, and festivities, are a blast. Starting with a ceremony in front of North Wildwood City Hall at 11:30am, followed by the parade, beginning there at 12 noon up Atlantic Avenue, towards Olde New Jersey Avenue. There are plenty of parts that get rawdie, so be prepared, but away from the bars and party tents, it’s all family fun.

6. Morristown, NJ: Saturday, March 11th, 2017

12:00 pm

With a variety of eateries, bars, pubs, and a green in the center of the city, this is one of the best parades in the state. The parade route is South Street to Atno Avenue and about 20 bands playing (not including bagpipers), and over 50,000 people in attendance, so be prepared for crowds, and a be prepared for it to spill over into bars and restaurants, so if crowds aren’t your scene, be prepared.

2017 St. Patrick's Day Parades in New Jersey

7. Hamilton, NJ: Saturday, March 11th, 2017

1:00pm

This parade is a town-wide tradition, starting at Nottingham Fire House, at 200 Mercer Street in Hamilton, this one is fun for the whole family and not to be missed.

8. Seaside Heights, NJ: Saturday, March 11th, 2017

12:00 pm

The Ocean county parade is a Jersey Shore Tradition! Starting at noon, the parade goes from J Street to Hancock Ave. along with all  the fun the shore has to offer. This is an amazing time as long as the sun is shining.

9. Elizabeth, NJ: Saturday, March 11th, 2017

1:00 pm

Parade begins at 1pm in Union east through Morris Avenue to a turn at Main Reviewing Stand and ends at Roosevelt Avenue. There are floats, music, and dancers, fun for the ENTIRE Family

2017 St. Patrick's Day Parades in New Jersey

10. Atlantic City, NJ: Saturday, March 11th, 2017

1:00pm

Traditional Parade goes the length of the Boardwalk to Albany Avenue, stopping, unofficially, at the Knife & Fork Inn.

11. Sea Isle City, NJ: Saturday, March 11th, 2017

3:30pm

Parades line up at 84th East Landis Avenue, and ends at Kix-McNutley’s on 63rd Street.

12. Farmingdale, NJ: Sunday, March 12th, 2017

11:00am

The most unique celebration on our list. It’s St. Patrick’s Day in the 1830’s! How cool is that? Relive St. Patrick’s Day back in the time of yesteryear. Reenacting of the life and times in the early 1800’s. The story line: “Mr. Allaire has given the Irish workers the day off which the rest of the workers do not take kindly too” Taking place from 11am-4pm at The Historic Village at Allaire: 4263 Atlantic Avenue, Farmingdale, NJ. And special chapel program at 1pm and 3pm. For More Information on this great event, click HERE.

St. Patrick's Day Parades in New Jersey 2017

13. Philadelphia, PA: Sunday, March 12th, 2017

11:30am

Though, technically not a New Jersey parade, this one is so close and such a great one. Running from Broad street to Market Street, then going across Penn’s Landing. This, like all major metropolitan cities, tends to be pretty crowded, so avoid tolls and traffic by taking NJ Transit right to the heart of the action, especially if your entertaining adult fun.

14.Freehold, NJ: Sunday, March 12th, 2017

12:00pm

Great Family Fun! Lots of fun for kids to do and activities for the whole family. Starting at noon and running along Main Street in downtown Freehold. This is the Parade to bring the kids along!

15. West Orange, NJ: Sunday, March 12th, 2017

12:15 pm

Another traditional St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the parade route begins at 12:15pm at the corners of Main Street and Mt. Pleasant Avenue (at West  Orange Town Hall) and runs North on Main Street to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, on Eagle Rock Avenue.

St. Patrick's Day Parades in New Jersey 2017

16. Asbury Park, NJ: Sunday, March 12th, 2017

1:00pm

Quickly becoming one of the best St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the State, it is definitely worth seeing. Starting promptly at 1:00pm at 5th and Ocean Ave, going south to Cookman Ave. These local bars and restaurants promote the event and are recently refinished and great venues to celebrate.

17. Rumson, NJ: Sunday, March 12th, 2017

1:00pm

This parade is celebrating its 5th year and going strong. Starting at 1pm at Victory Park and Allen Street and running up River Rd. then heading toward Carton Street. The parade is expected to end around 2:30pm.

18.  Woodbridge, NJ: Sunday, March 12th, 2017

1:30pm

Traditional parade, from Woodbridge High School to Woodbridge Town Hall. Full day of festivities in down town Woodbridge on Main Street including bars and restaurants

St. Patrick's Day in New Jersey 2017

19. Hackettstown, NJ: Sunday, March 12th 2017

3:30pm

Parade begins promptly at 3:30pm. This parade is unique, in that you can enter it yourself, and design your own unique float. Prizes are awarded to the top floats. Parade begins in front of Post Office 120 Grand Ave. Round right corner onto Main Street toward David’s Country Inn, bear right onto Mountain Ave., march down, end route at Union Cemetery. For more information on T-Shirts, parade info, and entering a float in the parade, click HERE

20. New York City: Friday, March 17th, 2017

11:00am

Now, again, not technically New Jersey, obviously, it is difficult to not include one of the greatest, oldest, and largest in the country. Starting at 11:00 am the parade runs along 5th Avenue and continues until around 5pm. Then the rest of the Irish fare ensues. NYC has no shortage of Irish pubs, which will be flooded with bagpipers, flags, Irish music, green beer, novelty hats, and green as the Emerald Isle itself. Again, if you wish to participate in  these extracurricular activities, I recommend taking the train, avoid all of the hoopla.

21. Newark, NJ: Friday, March 17th, 2017

1:00pm

The only St. Patrick’s Day parade to actually take place on St. Patrick’s Day in New Jersey this year, this one is one of the state’s oldest. Starting at 1:00pm at the Prudential Center to Gateway center, NJPAC, Military Park, St. Patrick’s Pro-Cathedral, and Washington Park. There are plenty of eateries and bars along the way that are there to enjoy, especially since it takes place right in the middle of Irish Heritage week, all local places will be involved. Again, very easily accessible by public transportation, so leave your worries with your car.

St. Patrick's Day Parades in New Jersey 2017

22. Newton, NJ (Sussex County): Saturday, March 18th, 2017

11:30am

Spring Street in Newton. The Lineup begins at 9am. This Parade is a traditional kind, fun for the whole family!

23. Robbinsville, NJ: Saturday, March 18th, 2017

1:00pm

With opening ceremonies beginning at 12:30pm (I recommend getting there at Noon) at the Foxmoor Shopping Center, Rt. 33 and Washington Blvd. The route goes north on Washington and makes a right onto North Street, then a right on Newtown Blvd., then another right onto Lake Drive East, and continuing past the gazebo area, then left onto Union Street, and proceed past the reviewing stand at Union and Burnet Walk. Fun for the whole family!

24. Highlands, NJ: Saturday, March 18th, 2017

2:00pm

The 15th Annual Highlands St. Patrick’s Day Parade kicks off at 2pm at Huddy Park and continues along Bay Avenue. Great fun for the whole family, with bagpipers, Irish dancers, festive music, floats, and marching bands. This parade has something for the whole family to enjoy.

St. Patrick's Day in New Jersey 2017

25. South Amboy, NJ: Sunday, March 19th, 2017

1:00pm

This is all the typical Irish fare you’ve come to expect, bagpipes, marching bands, dancers, with both civic and nonprofit organizers showing their support for the city and the parade. Also low key great little strip of bars and restaurants that keep the party going!

26. Bayonne, NJ: Sunday, March 19th, 2017

1:00pm

Starting promptly at 1pm on Broadway from 5th Street to 39th Street. The parade route will go up Broadway to 40th Street, then west on 40th to the reviewing stand, at the entrance to the Gregg-Bayonne County Park, between 40th and 41st Street on Avenue C. Local establishments make this one of the better parades in the state, a great time for both adults and children alike.

27. Keyport, NJ: Saturday, March 25th, 2017

1:00pm

Starting promptly at 1pm, and beginning at St. Joseph’s Church on Maple Place, going down West Front Street to Broad Street and ending at Fireman’s Park, this quaint parade is not to be missed.

St. Patrick's Day in New Jersey 2017

29. Waretown, NJ: Saturday, March 25th, 2017
