Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

Summer 2018 – 15 Tips For Maintaining Your Home in The Heat

“Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.”

—Henry James

Summer 2018: 15 Tips to Maintaining Your Home in the Heat

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

Summer is BACK! Sure the days are longer, the air sweeter, the sun shines brightly, and the weather encourages outdoor fun, but the HEAT, MY GOD THE HEAT.  This weather can be a strain on your home, especially if it’s older.  The best way to handle the beating of heat, sun, and weather on your fortress of solitude, is TO PREPARE. That’s why we have created a simple to-do list to ensure your home survives for one season.

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

HERE ARE 10 SIMPLE HOUSE KEEPING TIPS TO PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR SUMMER

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

1.) Gutters: Check for Leaks or Loosening

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

Make sure all of your gutters and drains are free from debris and leaves. Improper draining could lead to flooding of the basement and property devastation.  While clearing the gutters, make sure they are securely attached. A 5 cent screw is far cheaper than siding, roof, or landscape damage, or worse, injuring on a loved one or neighbor. Make sure your gutter drains are clear as well, so water may drain away from the house, instead of inside.

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

2.) Leveling: Filling in the areas of your yard or foundation that are uneven

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

The unforgiving Winter can cause uneven lawn levels and low points surrounding your home’s foundation. Then comes Spring, with Spring comes rain. We all know the rhyme. Depending on your area, rain can cause flooding, which can lead to water damage around the foundation and, come Summer, thanks to those pools of water, AT BEST, they become breeding grounds for insects and put a damper on a Summer party. At worst?

……. Well take a gander at the above gif.

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

3.) Windows & Entryways: Check the Wood and Sealing

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

Make sure you make the best of your energy bill. To check, take a screwdriver and make sure there’s no separation in wood or the sealant on your windows, door jams, decks, or railings. If there are gaps, now is the time to repair, before the weather turns colder and damage them further and cause a larger problem later.

4.) Check Your Roof

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

You don’t have to start off on your roof for this, work smarter, not harder. Check it from your yard and check for any damaged, missing, split, or loose shingles or gaps, caused by the harsh winter weather. CHECK THEM NOW! The harsh summer sun can be extremely damaging to roof shingles. You should also check to see if shingles need to be repaired surrounding chimneys or vents, if they do, don’t be a hero, get an experienced roofer to fix these areas. The cost of these simple tasks will be far cheaper than replacing your entire roof later. If you need vast repairs, now would be a great time to begin budgeting money to fix your roof.

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

5.) Chimney: Check for Splits

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

After the thaw of Winter, your chimney has often taken 4-6 months of abuse from need to stay warm. Do yourself a favor and have a certified chimney sweep, to clean out your flue and inspected. Also check the chimney itself for damage and have it repair.

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

6.) Inspect Concrete Tabs For Movement

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

This is the time of year to inspect all the concrete slaps around your home to find movement. In the winter, freezing water causes matter to expand which may cause them to move. Concrete slaps should drain away from your home, but if the gap becomes to wide, fill in the gap with cement or silicone chalk after power washing out the gap before sealing.

7.) Old Firewood: Remove or Replace

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

Depending on your home, firewood is commonplace. The typical storage of wood outside throughout the winter. But as the season changes, dispose of that dead wood. The weather has made them either water logged, bug infested, or other problems that render them useless. The best practice for storing firewood is, covered, 18 inches off the ground, and at least 2 feet from a structure.

8.) Garden Hoses: Check for Leaks or Damage

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

Winter can be murder on your outdoor water faucets for freeze damage. To check, place your thumb over the opening of the faucet, turn it on, if your finger stops the flow of water completely, there is most likely damage to the interior sections of the pipes and needs replacement. If the hose itself isn’t stored properly, you may need to check your hose for dry rot. If there is, just replace the entire hose.

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

9.) Cooling System: Clean and Maintain

Summer Tips For Your Home 2018

If you have to perform more than a simple cleaning, NOW is the time to hire an air conditioning specialist to perform maintenance. Why now? Because as soon as the heat increases, more and more people will notice theirs is not working as it should, filling up a specialist’s appointment book. While you sweat out the days of summer.

Spring 2018 in New Jersey

Spring 2018 in New Jersey – 10 Tips for Getting Your Home Ready from Spring

“When spring came, even the false spring, there were no problems except where to be happiest. The only thing that could spoil a day was people and if you could keep from making engagements, each day had no limits. People were always the limiters of happiness except for the very few that were as good as spring itself.”

– Ernest Hemingway

10 Tips for Getting Your Home Ready for Spring

Spring 2018 in New Jersey

Spring, the eternal season of hope, is, once again, upon us. The days begin to grow longer, the air smells sweeter, the flowers bloom more brightly, and the temperature becomes ideal. For some, Spring means Weddings, outdoor eateries, gardening, Baseball in full swing, or other outdoor activities. But with the warmth and sun that breaks us free from the shackles of winter, that same sun shines a light on gutters clogged with leaves, sidewalks with trip educing cracks, or flower beds filled with plants of seasons past.

Before you jump into Spring with both feet, then into the following Summer, let us help you target your Spring Maintenance chores that you may forget, with such, so you can fully enjoy the beauty of the season.

Spring 2018 in New Jersey

2.) Fill in Areas of Unleavened Yard or Foundation

In the Winter, harsh weather can cause lawn levels to become unbalanced and areas surrounding a home’s foundation can become low. While keeping that in mind, with Spring comes rain. We all know the rhyme. 3.) Check Window and Door Pane Wood

Spring 2018 in New Jersey

Use a screwdriver to see if there’s any separation in wood on windows, door jams, decks, or railings. If there are gaps, now is the time to repair, before spring rains damage them further and expose more wood.

4.) Check Roof Shingles

Spring 2018 in New Jersey

While standing in your yard, check your roof from afar, no need to bust out a ladder if it’s unnecessary. Look for any damaged or missing shingles from the winter weather. Now is the time to check, as the harsh summer sun can be extremely damaging to roof shingles. So check for split, loose, or missing pieces need to be replaced. You should also check to see if shingles need to be repaired surrounding chimneys or vents, if they do, don’t be a hero, get an experienced roofer to fix these areas. If you own a home with a wood-burning fireplace, firewood is necessary. Most people store it outside throughout the winter, but after the season ends, get rid of that dead wood. The weather has made them either water logged or other problems that cause them to be useless. The best practice for storing firewood is, covered, 18 inches off the ground, and at least 2 feet from a structure.

8.) Check Hoses For Damage

9.) Clean Your Cooling System

Now is the time to hire an air conditioning specialist to clean coils and air filters in your air unit to keep it working at peak performance. Why now? Because as soon as the heat increases, more and more people will notice theirs is not working as it should and will call said professional, making it difficult to get an appointment and leaving you to sweat it out.

10.) Check Fuel and Blades

Spring 2018 in New Jersey

Now is the time to stock up on gas, batteries, chargers, or sharpen blades. Whether it be your lawn mower or BBQ, stock up on fuel (propane or petroleum), fill them up now and never worry about it until next year. The same goes with lawn mower blades. Give them a good sharpening now in the spring, when it’s pleasant outside, and don’t worry about it come August, when mowing the lawn alone is already an endurance test. No need to add more activity in the blazing heat.

Now that these Simple Steps are Done, Take some time to smell the roses and enjoy the cool spring breezes that poets write about, painters paint, and all can appreciate.

NYC has no shortage of Irish pubs, which will be flooded with bagpipers, flags, Irish music, green beer, novelty hats, and green as the Emerald Isle itself. Again, if you wish to participate in  these extracurricular activities, I recommend taking the train, avoid all of the hoopla.

Super Bowl 2018 Life Hacks

Big Game Life Hacks

The Super Bowl is the one sporting event that nearly ALL Americans can appreciate for one Sunday in Winter. Aside from the football game itself, there are plenty of ways to have fun. One of the most enjoyable ways to celebrate is with a Super Bowl Party! Whether you throwing it or attending it, here are some life hacks to make THE BIG GAME the most enjoyable event (so far) this YEAR!

In order to get your party off to a great start. You need to have to make the most comfortable environment possible. Well check out these deals, so you’re ready to enjoy the game and company.

Televisions:

The first step to seeing the game, is actually seeing the game. If you have an outdated, 13 inch, black and white television with bunny ear antennas, then you will have some disappointed guests.

It may be time for an upgrade. We’re here to help. There are some great deals out there, especially during the post holiday sales. Check it out:

Seating:

Super Bowl 2018 Life Hacks

One problem you may have is ample seating, this is a HUGE problem. There’s nothing less fun than spending 3-4 hours of a football game sitting on the floor.  It can be a LONG game. Even more selfishly, forget the other people, what about you? There’s a reason your father sat in that one specific chair throughout every major television event. Now would be the time to elevate your sitting game.

Super Bowl Bingo:

Sometimes the game can be difficult for kids to appreciate, turn it into a game for them with Super Bowl Bingo. Played the same way as regular bingo, just with a Super Bowl twist. Look at this for an example:

Party Favors:

Make the game more fun with extra jerseys, or even under-eye stickers:

Super Bowl Box:

Make the game interesting to your guests and have them play the super bowl box game:

  • STEP 1

Start off with an empty 10 by 10 grid. This will give you 100 Squares for people to choose from.

Super Bowl Parties 2017

  • STEP 2

Depending on which game you are playing with, simply assign one team to the columns, and one to the rows.

Super Bowl 2018 Life Hacks

  • STEP 3

Now, start recruiting people to join your Football Squares pool by letting them choose which squares they want. If you use our site to Play Football Squares Online, this will be a much easier process since you can simply email everyone the link to your site and let them choose their squares. If you decide to use a Spreadsheet or Printable Sheet, then this proces may take you some time and effort since you have to manually pass along the file or sheet.

Once all the squares have been filled, it is time to assign the numbers to each column and row. By playing online, this is as simple as a click of the button. For those using offline options, randomly assign numbers 0 through 9 to each column, followed by doing the same for each row. Now each square represents a specific score in the game based on the column and row numbers

Super Bowl 2018 Life Hacks

STEP 4

Your Football Squares grid is now complete, and you just need to wait til the game is played to determine who will be your winners. A winner will be determined at the end of the 1st quarter, 2nd quarter, 3rd quarter, and Final Game score. The winner is determined by looking at the last number in each teams’ score, and then matching those numbers on the grid and seeing which square intersects those two numbers. An example would be if the Miami Dolphins were playing the New York Giants in the Super Bowl, and the score at halftime was Miami Dolphins 23, and NY Giants 14. The last number for the Dolphins is 3, and the last number for the Giants is 4. The square on the grid that has the Dolphins with a number of 3, and Giants score of 4, would be the winner.

Super Bowl 2018 Food Hacks

Now that we have the basics, it’s time to set up the party. Here are some great hints to throw a great party:

  • Corn On The Cobb in Bulk:

    Super Bowl 2018 Life Hacks

Recipe:

Easy as pie. Put your chucked corn into a large cooler. Boil water in a tea pot. Once boiled, pour the water into the cooler (it will keep things cold as well as hot). Let sit for 15-20 minutes, then enjoy with salt and/or butter.

  • Beef and Cheese Tortilla Dip:

Super Bowl 2018 Life Hacks

Recipe:

  1. In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain well.
  2. Transfer to a greased 3-qt. slow cooker; stir in the cheese, salsa and garlic powder. Cover and cook on low for 3-4 hours or until heated through. Stir; serve warm with tortilla chips or cubed bread. Yield: 7 cups.

  • Classic Buffalo Wings:

Super Bowl 2018 Life Hacks

Recipe:

1.) Dredge wings in flour and deep fry until cooked.

2.) Toss the wings in a bowl with 6 tablespoons of melted butter, with 1/2 a cup of buffalo wing hot sauce (Frank’s is my personal favorite).

3.) Then serve with celery sticks and blue cheese dressing.

  • Thai Sweet Potato Nachos:

Super Bowl 2018 Life Hacks

Recipe:

1.) Preheat oven to 400ºF.

2.) Place the sweet potato slices on two baking sheets that have been sprayed with oil—they should be side-by-side, but not overlapping. Spray the tops with additional oil and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 10 minutes, then flip the slices over and bake for about 10 minutes more, until just beginning to crisp. Remove from the oven.

3.) While the sweet potatoes are roasting, start the peanut sauce. Whisk together the peanut butter, rice vinegar, tamari, sesame oil, sugar, ginger, garlic, and 2 tablespoons of water in a small bowl. If the sauce is too thick, add more water one tablespoon at a time. (Different brands of peanut butter have different consistencies!) Add red pepper flakes or sriracha to taste, if using.

4.) Divide the sweet potato slices onto 4 plates and drizzle them with peanut sauce. Top with the diced pepper, shredded carrot, cilantro, green onions, and roasted peanuts and serve with a squeeze of fresh lime juice.

ENJOY THE GAME!!!

Much of the humor has a twist aimed at adults in the style of Soupy Sales and Pee Wee Herman. The show featured slapstick comedy, puppetry, some audience participation, and piano music. Floyd’s puppet sidekick (actually a ventriloquial figure) was named Oogie. His on-air interaction with off camera staff and sidekicks is somewhat in the vein of what Howard Stern and Chelsea Handler would later do.

Thanksgiving 2017 – 11 Thanksgiving Life Hacks to Make Your Holiday Easier

11 Thanksgiving Life Hacks to Make Your Holiday Easier

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

We all love Thanksgiving. It’s a great day to relax, eat, drink, watch football, and spend time with loved ones (and even not so loved ones). But if your the host of the holiday, it can be quite stressful. It’s a lot to worry about: Is the turkey cooked correctly? Are the mashed potatoes fluffy? Did the pies cook evenly? Where are those recipes?

It’s enough to make, even the most relaxed person, stress to the point of shaking

Well, we are here to help! Look no further than the Kerr team to make your Thanksgiving as Painless and flowing with ease as possible with these

11 Thanksgiving Life Hacks to Make Your Holiday Easier

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

1.) Ambiance

This is step one. Before you cook anything, plan ahead and make your guests feel welcome. And just because you want things to look nice, doesn’t mean you have to break the bank.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey Use pine cones from the yard, cook them on a cooking sheet in the oven for about 20 minutes on 400 degrees, to remove undesirables that have made the pine cones their home, and arrange them on a simple serving tray, or surround a glass covered candle, as a center piece for your Thanksgiving table.
Set the mood for your guests by setting up your own candle design. Use a simple glass, or buy one from a local warehouse store for extremely cheap, it doesn’t have to be amazing, you’re not opening a bar, just lighting a candle. Put un-popped popcorn kernels on the sides of the glass to give it a cool feel. Wrap a bow around it for added charm. Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey
Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey Use a pumpkin as a wine cooler. If you decide to make pumpkin pie from scratch, don’t discard the pumpkin itself. Line the interior with plastic wrap, fill it with ice, then place a few bottles of wine, depending on the size of the pumpkin, to give your guests a cute twist on their drinks!

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

2.) Recipes

One of the hardest parts of thanksgiving that you can’t fix is space. Your counter can only hold so many items before it is full of stuff. Don’t clutter it with big, or even small, cookbooks. You don’t have room for THAT!

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

Plan ahead. Print out recipes before, or copy them, and tape them to your cabinet doors. This will not only save space, but keep the recipe eye level, so you can refer to it with ease.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

3.) Pre-Cut

Aside from space, another thing we can’t help is time. You can’t make more of it, but you can manage it to perfection. One of those things you can do is prep your meal by cutting your vegetables either the day before or the night before and put them in plastic sandwich bags. Do it to a precise level by splitting them up into separate bags and label them with the dish they are for. We are not all Gordon Ramsey in the kitchen, and able to cut veggies and such in one fail swoop. Take your time, don’t hurt yourself, and save it for later. Your fingers will thank you.

4.) Clean Your Potatoes with a Dishwasher

Mashed potatoes are a staple at Thanksgiving. If you have a large group of people coming, make washing potatoes an ease by washing them in the dishwasher (no soap). This will not only make it easy to clean them, but it makes peeling them a breeze. Another tip to skin them, is boil the potatoes for a little bit, then throw them in ice water. The drastic change in temperature will shock the skin and make peeling a breeze.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

5.) More Potatoes

As discussed earlier, potatoes are delicious, but so time consuming. Remove that task by cooking the potatoes in a slow cooker, or at the very least, keep them warm in a crock pot. You’ll have a whole other burner for gravy (or whatever). Also, use a little bit of baking powder, this will make the potatoes even fluffier.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

6.) Use Your Coolers

Again, space is key to an organized meal. Don’t use up valuable real estate in your fridge on cans of soda, wine, water, or whatever. Use your coolers. This will keep the drinks cold, while keeping the guests out of your way and hot items off their shirts. Also, if you plan on making corn, a cooler can be used quite well to cook it. Though it keeps things quite cold, it can also keep things hot. Put the ears of corn at the bottom and boil a kettle of water. Then just dump the boiling water on the corn and let physics work.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

7.) Use a Coffee Thermos to Keep Gravy Warm

Again, time is key! Make your gravy beforehand and use a typical coffee thermos to keep it warm. If it works for coffee, it’ll work for gravy. Plus everyone will be impressed, and you’ll look like a culinary MacGyver. (To be an extra wiz in the kitchen, add some soy sauce to the gravy. It really adds a great kick!)

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

8.) Make Pies Easy

Listen, we all love pie. But it can be a hassle. Here’s a couple easy tricks to help you:

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey Make your pie shell early, then freeze it. It will save not only time, but the pie will maintain its shape better in the oven. This will free up time later on.
Weigh down your pie crust with rice, beans, or even loose change. Just wrap the crust in napkins, or plastic wrap, or even aluminum foil. Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey
Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey To give your pie the perfect riveting around the outside of the pie crust, use an old necklace to give that perfect indentation. I recommend an old necklace, so you don’t ruin your Sunday’s best.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

9.) Perfect Stuffing

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

To avoid a mess, use a cupcake tray to cook your stuffing. This, not only portions out the stuffing equally among your guests, but this gives it the perfect amount of browning to the stuffing, while it cooks in the oven.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

10.) Use a Wine Glass to Cut Biscuits

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

Use an older wine glass to cut biscuits out of your dough. I’d say an older glass, just in case you put too much pressure and break the glass. But doing this will give your biscuits uniformity and make the cutting a breeze.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

11.) The Turkey

The Turkey is the centerpiece of this meal. There are several ways that you can spruce up the turkey, or save it if your like me.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

Take a Look:

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

Ice Down Your Turkey before cooking it to keep it from drying out. Believe it or not, this works. Cook the breast at a slightly lower temperature, this will solve the problem of the white meat cooking faster than the dark.

Slow the cook the turkey overnight to save the oven space. Yes, you can. And yes, this will make your Thanksgiving feel infinitely easier. Pop the bird in the oven the evening before and wake up to a nearly completed Thanksgiving feast.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey DIY Aluminum Foil Roasting Rack. The point of a rack is to hold your bird above the pan so heat can circulate evenly. Who says it has to be made of wire or cost a lot of money? If you don’t have the store-bought variety, crumple some sheets of foil into thick ropes and wrap them in coils on the bottom of your pan. Or go biodegradable and place the bird on a bed of halved onions, carrots and celery.
Use Chicken Broth as a Revive Your Turkey.  Overcooked the bird? Before you spirit that platter of dried-out breast meat to the table, drizzle it with a little warm chicken broth. It’ll help moisten the meat and add flavor. This is also a good trick for perking up slices that have gone from room temp to cold. Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey
Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey  Cook white meat and dark meat separately.  Never, never let dry breast meat happen to you. Check out this helpful video that shows exactly how to break down a turkey into parts, then cook separately with recipes like Butter-Roasted Turkey Breast and Braised Turkey Thighs.

Measuring Cup As a Fat Separator. The secret to great gravy is skimmed — not greasy — pan drippings. If you’re without a fat separator, pour your drippings into a large heatproof measuring cup and pop it in the freezer. As the drippings cool, the fat will rise to the top and solidify, making it easy to skim off with a spoon.

NOW!

All that’s left is time to feast.

Thanksgiving 2017 in New Jersey

For Clean Up, the best advice I can give, clean as you go. It’ll save up so much more time and leave you more space to cook.

And, as Always:
